President Samia urges stronger climate financing and calls for a united African voice

Addis Ababa — President Samia Suluhu Hassan has urged African leaders to push for stronger climate financing, improved early warning systems, and a united continental stance in global climate negotiations.

Speaking at the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) meeting on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, she warned that climate change continues to disrupt key sectors, including agriculture, energy, fisheries, tourism, and transport, threatening livelihoods across Africa.

She noted that increasingly frequent extreme weather events are placing heavy pressure on vulnerable communities and called for urgent, coordinated action to protect development gains.

President Hassan highlighted Tanzania’s efforts to build resilience through investment in renewable energy and promotion of clean cooking solutions, while stressing the importance of reliable forecasting and stronger collaboration with regional institutions to enhance early warning systems.

On climate financing, she called on developed nations to honour their commitments and ensure accessible, predictable funding for adaptation and mitigation. She emphasised that Africa must speak with one voice in global negotiations to safeguard its development priorities.
