President Samia secures maximum value for Tanzania as Kabanga Nickel Project moves forward
Under the leadership of Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania is advancing toward a major economic milestone as the Kabanga Nickel Project enters a critical implementation phase. The project is expected to become one of the country’s most transformative mining and industrial investments, driving economic growth, industrialization, and job creation.
The progress follows a high-level meeting at the State House between President Samia, Treasury Registrar Mr. Nehemiah Mchechu, and Mr. Keith Liddell, Founder and Executive Chairman of Kabanga Nickel Limited and Lifezone Metals.
A key outcome of the discussions is the successful agreement on a framework that ensures mineral beneficiation and value addition will be undertaken within Tanzania. This achievement reflects the government’s long-standing commitment to maximizing the benefits derived from the nation’s natural resources by promoting local processing rather than exporting raw minerals.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Liddell commended President Samia’s leadership and continued support for the project, reaffirming the investors’ commitment to its timely delivery.
“The mine is coming. The beneficiation is coming. Be assured that we are working closely with Team Tanzania to deliver this project as quickly as possible,” said Liddell.
Treasury Registrar Mr. Mchechu emphasized that the government has remained focused on safeguarding Tanzania’s interests throughout the negotiations. With both parties now aligned on a mutually beneficial structure, attention is shifting toward finalizing the beneficiation and refinery components to ensure the project proceeds in line with President Samia’s vision.
Describing Kabanga as a “game-changing project,” Mchechu noted that it will create employment opportunities, facilitate technology transfer, strengthen local content participation, and generate substantial government revenue through taxes and dividends.
Once operational, the Kabanga Nickel Project is expected to position Tanzania among the world’s leading suppliers of critical minerals, enhancing the country’s strategic importance in global supply chains while accelerating its broader industrialization and development agenda.
Dar es Salaam.ย Tanzania expects to attract investments and business worth more than $2 billion (about Sh5.2 trillion) from Russia over the next three to five years following President Samia Suluhu Hassanโs recent state visit and participation in the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
The projection was announced on Sunday, June 7, 2026, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperationโs Director of Economic Diplomacy, Ambassador John Ulanga, during a briefing on the outcomes of the visit.
He said the trip had opened new opportunities for trade and investment, with major Russian companies expressing interest in several strategic sectors.
โBased on the discussions held on trade and investment, we are confident that within the next three to five years, Tanzania will attract investments and business worth more than $2 billion,” he said
“This will position Russia among Tanzaniaโs key development partners,โ he added.
The health sector emerged as one of the most promising areas of cooperation, with Russian firms expressing interest in pharmaceutical manufacturing and vaccine production.
โRussian companies have indicated that within the next five years they can partner with Tanzania to produce up to 20 million vaccine doses locally for both domestic use and regional markets,โ Mr Ulanga said.
He attributed the growing interest to President Hassanโs economic diplomacy, which has promoted Tanzania as an attractive destination for investment, trade, and tourism.
The mining sector was identified as another key area of interest, particularly strategic minerals such as uranium, nickel, and other critical minerals used in modern technologies.
Furthermore, Mr Ulanga said Russian energy companies, including Gazprom, had also shown interest in participating in Tanzaniaโs oil and gas exploration and development projects.
Agriculture featured prominently in the discussions, with investors exploring opportunities in modern farming technologies, agro-processing, and value addition for export products such as cashew nuts, coffee, and tea.
The technology sector also attracted attention, with Russian firms seeking partnerships with Tanzanian start-ups to support innovation and strengthen the countryโs digital economy.
Minister of State in the Presidentโs Office (Planning and Investment), Prof Kitila Mkumbo, said the visit had also delivered significant gains in education, science, and technology cooperation.
He said agreements signed between the two countries would facilitate recognition of academic qualifications and create opportunities for students to pursue dual-degree programmes.
โAs we implement Vision 2050, we must seek investment opportunities across the world. This visit has opened another important door and will contribute to economic growth,โ he said.
Prof Mkumbo added that the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) had signed cooperation agreements with Russian institutions to strengthen training and research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science.
The partnerships are expected to enhance Tanzaniaโs digital skills base and support efforts to build a competitive digital economy.
Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister, Mr Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, said the visit came at a time when Russia is expanding its engagement with African countries in trade, investment, and development cooperation.
He said Tanzania had positioned itself strategically within Russiaโs broader Africa agenda, strengthening its profile as a destination for investment and economic partnerships.
โThe visit has enabled Tanzania to position itself within Russiaโs wider strategy of expanding cooperation with African countries in trade, investment, and development,โ he said.
Mr Kombo also highlighted education as a key area of benefit, noting that Russia had continued to expand scholarship opportunities for Tanzanian students.
He said the scholarships would help develop a new generation of Tanzanian professionals in science, technology, engineering, and other fields critical to national development.
โThese opportunities will increase the number of Tanzanian experts in science, technology, engineering, and other key sectors essential to the countryโs development agenda,โ he said.
Tanzania and Singapore have pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation in technology and economic development, building upon decades of diplomatic relations. The commitment came during high-level talks between President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Singaporeโs envoy Douglas Foo at the State House in Dar es Salaam on February 27, 2026.
The discussions focused on expanding collaboration across multiple sectors, including technology, education, health, and infrastructure development. Both nations emphasized the strategic importance of strengthening their partnership amid rapidly evolving global economic landscapes.
โTanzania values its relationship with Singapore and sees significant potential in learning from Singaporeโs technological advancement and economic success,โ a source close to the discussions revealed.
The meeting comes at a crucial time as Tanzania continues to position itself as a regional hub for trade and transportation in East Africa. Singapore, known for its world-class infrastructure and technological innovation, could provide valuable expertise to support Tanzaniaโs development goals.
Singapore has emerged as one of Asiaโs leading technology and financial centers, with particular strengths in digital infrastructure, smart city solutions, and maritime logistics. These are areas where Tanzania has expressed keen interest in developing further capacity.
For Tanzania, the enhanced cooperation represents an opportunity to attract investment and technical knowledge in key growth sectors. The East African nation has been implementing various economic reforms under President Hassanโs administration to create a more business-friendly environment and accelerate development.
Economic analysts note that the partnership could significantly benefit Tanzaniaโs burgeoning technology ecosystem. โSingaporeโs experience in creating an innovation-friendly regulatory framework could serve as a model for Tanzania as it seeks to develop its digital economy,โ said Dr. Emmanuel Materu, an economics professor at the University of Dar es Salaam.
Education was another focal point of the discussions, with both sides exploring opportunities for academic exchanges and capacity-building programs. Singaporeโs world-renowned educational institutions could provide valuable training for Tanzanian professionals in various fields.
In the health sector, potential areas for collaboration include medical technology, healthcare management systems, and pharmaceutical development. Tanzania has been working to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure, particularly following lessons learned during global health challenges.
The diplomatic relationship between Tanzania and Singapore dates back several decades, though economic ties have remained relatively modest. This renewed commitment signals a potential turning point in bilateral relations, with both countries showing interest in more substantive engagement.
Singaporeโs diplomatic outreach to Tanzania aligns with its broader strategy of diversifying economic partnerships beyond traditional markets, particularly in the rapidly growing African continent. For Singapore, Tanzania represents an attractive gateway to the East African Community, a regional bloc with a combined population of over 177 million people.
Trade between the two nations has been limited but has potential for growth. Tanzania primarily exports agricultural products and minerals to Singapore, while importing manufactured goods, chemicals, and technology.
Government officials indicated that follow-up meetings would be scheduled to develop specific cooperation frameworks and identify priority projects. A joint working group may be established to coordinate initiatives across the various sectors discussed.
As both countries navigate post-pandemic economic recovery and global uncertainties, this strengthened partnership could provide mutual benefits through diversified trade, knowledge transfer, and shared development goals.

Moscow. Russiaโs President Vladimir Putin has described President Samia Suluhu Hassanโs decision to make Moscow the destination of her first state visit after inauguration as a strong signal of Tanzaniaโs commitment to deepening relations between the two countries.
Welcoming President Hassan at the Kremlin yesterday, President Putin said the visit carried special significance as Tanzania and Russia prepare to mark 65 years of diplomatic relations this year.
โIt is gratifying to note that after your inauguration, you chose Russia as the first foreign country for your state visit. We see this as a very good sign,โ President Putin said.
He said that President Hassan had consistently supported the development of bilateral relations during her previous roles in government, including as minister and vice president.
Throughout the period, he said, President Hassan has helped to maintain what he described as an intensive and steadily growing partnership.
President Putin said trade between the two countries had expanded by between 20 and 25 percent over the past year and expressed confidence that there was significant room for further growth.
According to him, Tanzania and Russia have opportunities to broaden cooperation across strategic sectors, including energy, geological exploration, transport, logistics, healthcare and education.
The Russian leader also highlighted close cooperation on international affairs, saying the two countries continue to support one another and maintain regular dialogue on global issues.
He welcomed President Hassanโs participation in the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026, where Tanzania is expected to showcase its investment opportunities, and expressed hope that the country would also be represented at a high level during the next Russia-Africa Summit.
President Putin congratulated President Hassan ahead of her planned conferment of an honorary doctorate by the Peoplesโ Friendship University of Russia, also known as RUDN University.
In her remarks, President Hassan described the visit as historic, noting that it was the first state visit by a Tanzanian head of state to Russia since the 1969 trip by founding president Julius Nyerere.
She said the visit provided an opportunity to discuss the future of bilateral cooperation and sustainable development between the two nations.
โIt has been more than half a century since the last state visit to Russia,โ President Hassan said.
โThis is a historic trip to discuss issues of bilateral cooperation and sustainable development for our people.โ
President Hassan thanked Russia for its support during Africaโs liberation struggles and acknowledged the contribution Moscow has made to Tanzaniaโs development over the decades.
She also paid tribute to Russians who died during the Second World War, recalling her visit earlier in the day to Moscowโs Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where she laid a wreath in honour of those who lost their lives.
The visit comes as Tanzania and Russia seek to transform a relationship rooted in political solidarity into a broader economic partnership centred on trade, investment and technology cooperation.
According to an official statement presented during the visit, priority areas include energy, mining, transport infrastructure, logistics, agriculture, industrialisation, education, innovation and human capital development.
Bilateral trade has grown from $178.8 million in 2020 to about $307.5 million in 2025, while Tanzaniaโs exports to Russia have nearly quadrupled over the same period.
The two countries are expected to sign five memoranda of understanding during the visit, while business leaders meeting on the sidelines of SPIEF 2026 are targeting new investment commitments worth about $1 billion.
The visit also coincides with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Tanzania and Russia, which were established shortly after Tanganyika attained independence in 1961.
