Dodoma: The Government Chemist Laboratory Authority (GCLA) has facilitated the creation of more than 146,567 jobs between January 2025 and February 2026, largely taken by young people. The jobs were generated through registration of stakeholders in the chemical sector and services linked to importation, clearance, and transportation of chemical consignments.
Chief Government Chemist, Dr. Fedelice Mafumiko, said the opportunities emerged through the Customer Chemicals Management Portal (CCMP), which registered 4,406 stakeholders as required under the Chemicals Management law. Each registered stakeholder must employ at least five permanent workers and five casual labourers, creating an average of 10 jobs per stakeholder, mainly in handling and loading activities.
During the same period, the Authority issued 29,314 permits for the importation of chemical consignments. Each consignment requires clearance through customs procedures at ports and border posts, facilitating employment opportunities for 29,314 citizens and stakeholders involved in the clearance process.
Transport activities also contributed significantly to job creation. GCLA issued permits for the movement of about 1,829,825 tonnes of chemical consignments within and outside Tanzania. With a truck carrying roughly 30 tonnes, the consignments required thousands of drivers and logistics workers, generating over 73,193 employment opportunities, many filled by young people.
Dr. Mafumiko said the implementation of the Chemicals Management and Control Act has expanded employment across chemical import clearance, logistics, handling, and distribution services.
To strengthen service delivery, GCLA is constructing an Eastern Zone office and laboratory in Dar es Salaam at Sh16.74 billion, serving Dar es Salaam and the Coast Region. The Authority has also built staff rest houses at Rusumo, Kabanga, Mutukula, Holili, and Namanga border posts worth Sh1.13 billion to improve working conditions and support job creation.
