Tanzania has been ranked among Africa’s top five countries with the largest railway networks in 2026, highlighting the country’s continued investment in transport infrastructure and regional connectivity.
According to the latest Global Firepower Index, Tanzania has a total railway network length of 4,097 kilometers, making it the 5th-largest railway network in Africa and the 44th-largest globally.

The ranking comes as Tanzania continues to implement its ambitious Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, which is expected to strengthen trade, improve regional connectivity, and reduce transport costs across East and Central Africa.
Analysts say Tanzania’s strong position reflects sustained investment in railway infrastructure to support industrialization, trade and economic growth.
